International audience; In this paper we present the results of a study into integrating socio-cultural factors into predictive modelling. So far, predictive modelling has largely neglected the social and cultural dimensions of past landscapes. To maintain its value for archaeological research, therefore, it needs new methodologies, concepts and theories. High-temperature in-process inspection followed by 96-h robotic inspection of intentionally manufactured hydrogen crack in multi-pass robotic welding

Abstract This investigation introduces two new techniques to quantitatively address the challenging problem of understanding Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) in welding processes. The first technique is a novel procedure to create a known and controlled HIC in a welded sample. The second is an in-process monitoring technique to measure the initial formation and subsequent growth of the HIC in a multi-pass weld whilst being compatible with the high temperatures associated with the welding process. A flexible robotic cell for in-process inspection of multi-pass welds

Welds are currently only inspected after all the passes are complete and after allowing sufficient time for any hydrogen cracking to develop, typically over several days. Any defects introduced between passes are therefore unreported until fully buried, greatly complicating rework and also delaying early corrections to the weld process parameters. In-process inspection can provide early intervention but involves many challenges, including operation at high temperatures with significant gradients affecting acoustic velocities and, hence, beam directions. Teacher Guidance in Mathematical Problem-Solving Lessons: Insights from Two Professional Development Programs

When implementing a problem-solving lesson, the teacher needs to provide students appropriate guidance during problem solving. This demanding task requires understanding students’ work in progress and giving them necessary help without constraining their thinking. In this article, we share insights from two professional development programs on how teachers guided students’ problem solving and how they reflected on these instances. One of the programs included Finnish pre-service teachers, while the other program included US in-service teachers. This a write up of a talk given at the MATRIX conference at Creswick in 2017 (to be precise, on Friday, January 20, 2017). It reports on work in progress with P. Candelas and X. de la Ossa. The aim of that work is to determine, under certain conditions, the local Euler factors of the L-functions of the fibres of a family of varieties without recourse to the equations of the varieties in question, but solely from the associated Picard–Fuchs equation.
